Teaching students to choose the most appropriate tools for each task or each time, or person …is so important to the citizens of the future that the team of teachers from the Education Cooperative José Ramón Otero of Madrid has decided to conduct an “install party” popularly known as an event where the party is to spread free culture with practical examples such as the installation of free operating systems (Linux) on computers and help people know more about the freedom they have to choose among thousands of applications that are completely legal and be downloaded from the Internet.

Asturix Project, an association of technology social enterprise whose main mission is to promote Free Culture could not be left out of this initiative. So not only we support it but also we’ll participate actively in it. A team from the Community Asturix will move to the Arctic College coordinated by the leader and founder of Asturix, Luis Ivan Cuende to participate in a talk, in the exposition area and to collaborate in the instalation of Asturix OS in people computers.

 We’ll deliver a CD with Asturix 4 to all those who install it in the party or bring it installed on your computer.

Arctic College: A party against digital illiteracy

Bringing information and communication systems present to families is a very difficult and painful operation in a society where no one dares to measure digital illiteracy.

The term literacy is not old, you can apply equally to children and adults. Javier Solana told us when he was Minister of Education (1988-1992) “this is a new type of illiteracy: the digital” and that is a hazard that can cause very negative effects on the development of a country. Twenty years later a Minister of Culture (the most unpopular in the history of Spain) said it was with the artists “analog” meaning that penalized those using digital techniques. This is a clear example of social and political evolution of a country with a productivity index parked in the basement and an unemployment rate living in the attic.

 Symptoms of digital illiteracy

When John García Fernández, forty years, marketing director of a company is expressed in phrases like “Please Anne, send me a word with the names of those attending the meeting and an excel with the valuations of the best deals …” this is a typical case of digital illiteracy. John may be licensed, engineer, … is possible he has multiple masters … but has suffered a very skewed education for years in schools that used only a tool of the thousands that were. At his university, more of the same. Ann may be using OpenOffice Writer to draft the document and may send it to John in an open format such as PDF, but John does not speak of “document”, John does not ask for a document open format, perhaps he may not know what that is. And he may have a next generation smartphone working with an operating system based on GNU / Linux and he does not know that he’s using an open source operating system.

When a school is using only one operating system is depriving the students of the enormous wealth of diversity. Are being deprived of knowledge because many of them will leave the center thinking that there isn’t more operating systems. It’s as if we went back many years ago when there was only one TV channel. Imagine coming home and can’t change TV channel, just having one. That’s what happens in most schools in this country, they are using only one channel.

One of the great virtues of Asturix has always been the global vision of users of information systems. Thus, when the innovative Asturix 3 gave the leap into the world with its own personality came to be in the world ranking number 6 in Distrowatch popularity.

Today, January 13, 2011 and only three days of being officially launched the new version Asturix 4 is in the position 8 of the Distrowatch list to seven days, and up, which indicates that the expectations can even be improved. But not only that, in a previous blog post we talked about the huge number of downloads were occurring Asturix 3 despite the release was a year in the market and there was no significant news or publicity about it. Well, in just two days, the 10 and 11 of this month of January 2011 there have been 4657 downloads since 2230 cities in 118 countries, i.e. more in just two days that during all the month of December preceding. It is important to note that in addition to the large presence of European countries (significant rise in Germany, Italy and the UK) and America (sharp rise in the U.S., Mexico, Argentina and Brazil), the new statistics show strong presence in two continents: Asia (Beijing, Mumbai, Singapore, Colombo, Xi’an, Surabaya, Manila, Bangalore, Calcutta,…) and Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Wellington, Auckland,…).

Therefore, the forecasts we made to reach 20,000 downloads this January does not seem far-fetched but quite the opposite.

All thanks to the thousands of people throughout the world support the project both as collaborators in the development and users who contribute their ideas of experience with the system.

With a very ambitious and innovative format was presented the First Congress “Young and Free Culture with Open Source Software” based on three interesting areas: Technology, Entrepreneurship and Culture Youth oriented.
It was organized by Asturix Project, an technology association of social entrepreneurship recently domiciled at Valnalón sponsored by Cenatic (National Reference Center for the Application of ICT-based open source) and the Festival Society and Culture “San Pedro” The Felguera where the congress was held in full.

The director of the Congress was in charge of driving at all times. Luis Miguel Cuende is an expert in the  technological area, entrepreneurial culture and Free Software (a partner in the area of Institutional Relations of Asturix Project  and president of Asturlibre). In its recent history was also director of the First Congress of Free Software in the Self-Employment in March 2011 in Zaragoza.

First Luis Miguel Cuende grateful for the assistance to all participants and especially to co-sponsorship of Cenatic and The Festival Society and  without which would not be possible this conference. Unable to attend the Mayor of Langreo by incompatibility issues but attended early María Fernández Alvarez, 2 nd Deputy Mayor and then spoke a few words to those attending the 1 st Deputy Mayor Ana Oliva Rodríguez García.

After a brief presentation by Abraham Montes Zapico, president of the Festival Society and Culture “San Pedro” La Felguera, Congress began with the first speaker: José Manuel Pérez “Pericles”, Valnalón founder and social entrepreneur Ashoka, well known in the international arena of the entrepeneurship.

“Pericles” spoke of the importance of fostering an entrepreneurial culture among the young, very important to change the current socio-economic situation of our country. Then, Luis Iván Cuende introduced attendees to the basics of Free Culture, based on Free Software, ie the users’ freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, modify and distribute the modified software. Despite his young age, 16 years, Luis Iván Cuende already has four years experience in free software with which you began creating the first asturian operating system known : Asturix, which is already in a global context users on five continents and a growing community and more active and innovative. This experience is what has helped him to found Asturix Project social enterprise as an association of technology. He was recently awarded the first prize in the first edition of
HackNow given to the best programmer in Europe up to 18 years gathered at the event prize HackFwd Build 07 in Berlin last September 17. It has also recently participated in the global event TEDxYouth in Madrid and in the XVIII Congress Junior Enterprises in Bilbao.

The next block, once introduced into the Free Culture entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs by  the two best known of Asturias, a senior and a junior and served as the program in the section entitled “¿A young entrepreneur born or made? Do you dare to learn to be an entrepeneur?. It started with the block Xandru Cancelas, Social Media Marketing Strategist and Officer of Asturix Project.

Alejandro “Xandru” Cancelas works in Madrid in technical areas of computer security and also for some time combined with online marketing which is passionate and is launching a company dedicated to it:, XandruSoft with some work already interesting. Earlier this year, he did work the online marketing of the First Congress of Free Software in the Self-Employment, held in Zaragoza and has since been responsible for marketing online of Asturix Project.

Xandru Cancelas gave much importance to the action of bringing out the ideas as crucial to achieve a positive venture. With a “slides” very original  was exposing all steps necessary to undertake further using the ICT-related technology from open sources. He also spoke of young entrepreneurs who came to be a success and spoke of his own experience, how he had changed his life begin to relate to organizations that promote entrepreneurship. He also refers to young entrepreneurs young and specifically ceremony attended by a few days in Madrid: TEDxYouthMadrid.

Eva Pando, Director of the CEEI (European Business and Innovation Center of the Principality of Asturias) is a member of the Board of Innovation Asturian Club and vice president of ANCES among other charges. View slideshow.

“Support for young entrepreneurs” was the title of his section and she was explaining, as director of the Principality of Asturias CEEI, all  support to young scientific and / or technological entrepreneurs of Asturias. Eva Pando spoke of the importance of taking his team to more than twenty  experts in laboral, legal, marketing, accounting, … areas and the tremendous support they mean for entrepreneurs who want to start your business. On the other hand, they are the bridge between the ideas of entrepreneurs and investors resources. He also said that currently two of the speakers, Luis Iván Cuende and Alberto Elías de Ayala are being tutored in the creation of your company by CEEI Asturias.

Carlos Hellín

Luis Miguel Cuende again burst into the auditorium stage of the Festival Society and Culture San Pedro to talk about how important the work of some people in organizations. Some people who are often kept in the shade but without their work would not have great product. In this case refers to the importance of work as a packer when a new version as in the case of Asturix 4, and launch is imminent. Carlos Hellin has been one of the latest additions to Asturix Dev Team. He knew the project through the Campus Party in Valencia Spain last July, where Asturix Project had its prominent place in the keynote address by Jon “Maddog” Hall. Since then, Carlos Hellin Asturix Project actively participates. The Free Music, what do you sound? The following section was provided in the conference program. Jamendo, was present in this block, which is always included in the distributions of Asturix since version 3. In fact it was the first operating system to include free music in the system. This time we wanted to artists who work with the platform Jamendo to explain what is free music and for that we commissioned two group members Xera that has always published all his works in Creative Commons.

Vérval spoke of the importance of artists to facilitate the process of creation and dissemination of their works and  he explained how to publish in Creative Commons, as they do, the group Xera, warning about the differences between the different types of licenses. He made a definition of “culture” from several points of view as defined by Tylor, Bodybuilders, structural functionalism, structuralism, symbolic anthropology, Marxist and neo-or Ecofuncional. He defined  Free Cultural Work as one that allows the freedom to use the work and enjoy the benefits of its use, study, work and apply knowledge acquired in it, make and redistribute copies, full or partial information and make changes and improvements and distribute derivative works. Flavia, de Xera

His partner Xera group, Flavia took what appeared in the program as “How to make a physical CD music without any dependence on management entities“. And perfectly explained. All the detailed process for any artist who wants to take can do it as cheaply as possible (150 € in total for the whole process) and that the profits of their work to drive him and not the chain of intermediaries that are useless on the conventional process, such as the SGAE. With data accurate to the penny explained how they are able to produce a completely legal music CD and put it anywhere in the world and labeling, with the chassis, fully completed by 1.50 €. as a result, each CD sold is a profit which they not have to share with any private company dedicated to the management of copyright as is the case of SGAE.

At the end of his speech was presented the video of his new creation  “Yo Quixera”, an artistic wonder combining animation and live with the exceptional music of this group that distributes all licensed under Creative Commons and has already to his credit a large number of concerts in Spain and other European countries.

Then Luis Ivan Cuende presented the new version of the operating system created three years ago, Asturix 4 with reference to major developments what are incorporated. Asturix 3 version already had a great success for his great innovation as the introduction of facial recognition, being the first operating system to incorporate it and the integration of social networks and free music, etc, in addition to your system easy installation of applications: Asturix Installer. The new layout incorporates  Asturix On the new desktop-oriented user interface to facilitate the management of the user interface.

Gabriel Vañó  spoke about his initial experience in the textile industry world where colors are part of a whole world of commercial influences and cultures where the black in a Western culture as the Spanish can mean death and mourning while in a East may reflect just the opposite. With this pendrive you can run the Asturix 3 Lite on any computer regardless of the computer’s hard drive. Quim is already veterans in the Asturix community participating very actively in the development of both Asturix 3 as the next Asturix 4. Is a lover of free software and comes with passion to the art of programming for that was responsible for the “the art of programming with free software … ” included in the conference program. Philosophy Lover, Quim also treats us to a momentous series of reflections on art and on the Free Software concepts relating both simple examples. 2500 years ago was when he began the exciting world of programming, where Quim it refers to the logic of Aristotle, which is still used today in all programs. Ethics, beauty and truth are three fundamental elements with which it interacts art. Quim  continues to develop its entire contents according to the relationship between art and programming inducing to attendees have a more appropriate programming concept and sublime at the end of the conference.

The next item on the agenda of the congress was about “personal brand in social media.” Xandru Cancelas returned to the stage to explain what is the “personal bragding.” We offer differentiation as key to resolving problems or relationship similar profiles least remembered, … objectives and puts us in addition to the differentiation of trust relationships, reputation, position themselves as an expert and above all have the mindset of an entrepreneur. He gives us some tips on how to work the personal brand and professional brand and shows several examples. Sample some of the mission-oriented sites as LinkedIn and also speaks on Reputation Management and how important it is to know what you say about us so that we teach some reputation management tools both monitoring and management. “If you want, we can. Research Incubator driven projects Asturix Community” is the next block. Luis Iván Cuendespoke about her experience as an entrepreneur and the number of obstacles encountered from the beginning because of his youth. However, thanks to free software was able to develop their projects and still does today imbibing the true spirit of a philosophy of life, as he tells the audience. And that is how the Community has all the means available to reach those youngsters who have yet to be both practically no choice access to 18 years generally. The first young man to join the hotbed of technological projects with free software is Antonis 15 years with a computer security project from Greece. Sanjay Fernandes

Sanjay Fernandes sent us a video “Art & FreeSoftware, with PureData” about “Education, Art and Technology: How can coexist in the best way in the classroom?”. Sanjay Fernandes is working on a project with 7 kids ages 10 to 18 musical instruments built from recycled materials and using Pure Data for audio processing (amplification and small effects). He is currently teaching Pure Data at a school in Barcelona under the theme of music and mathematics to create a simple sequencer. Alberto Elías de Ayala

Alberto Elías de Ayala  was unable to travel from Madrid to Congress so he sent a video telling his experience as a young entrepreneur who started the technology 12 years with .Net programming in Visual Basic, but reached a point where it was bored until connected with the web world and discovered Free Software. Launched several blogs experiences, trying to create communities, … and these were his first steps into entrepreneurship, but not all went well, but as he says he learned a lot from mistakes. The highlight was when he discovered Android, the smartphone’s Linux. It had long been using Linux and have a free operating system on a mobile seemed impressive. Android with huge potential allowed him to connect quickly with this new world of smartphones through the participating blogs as editor:  android.es o droiders.es , Murcia GTUG organizer, Android developer with an agenda  A++genda made for students. Currently involved as a partner of Luis Ivan Cuende in the development of a web service-oriented startup.

Ricardo López

“Free culture: a world without borders.” Ricardo López, Asturix Project’s Communication Delegate, explains how thanks to free software we can get our software far beyond what I could never do proprietary software. Free software has a vital collaborative base that makes it grow exponentially and now based communication in a web infrastructure can be extended with little knowledge costs. Ricardo López refers to the time entered Asturix Distrowatch, an issue that led him personally and that made the distribution to be known in every continent, arriving at a particular time, when it launched version 3 to be in the position 6 of popularity, something that nobody would never have imagined a Spanish distribution. He also spoke of the relationship between Nova and Asturix Community, sponsored by the distribution of Computer Science University of Havana. Believes that communication with these communities in a collaborative way can benefit everyone: the developer, the final user … In conclusion encouraged to use and to undertake the Free Software.

Alaia, "Vive el momento"

It’s time to enjoy some live music. Alaia (Silvia Goyanes) presents his first album “Live in the moment” and she came to share with us. Alaia proposes an innovative direct  making the public share in his music through various instruments which she gives the people to join her in her songs. That way you create a participatory environment that encourages fun and enjoy your music like a real happy holiday. Alaia on acoustic, with only the support of the guitar and the voice was able to fill the large room sensations, unforgettable moments when all of us in the auditorium had connected and shared not only knowledge but also the vibrations now voice and guitar of a singer who will secure a place in the musical fabric. There is a video uploaded to youtube but it should be clear that is recorded with a cellphone, so the techniques are rather claims invalid, but the important thing is to share the experience of a powerful but sometimes live accompaniment of the attendees was very according to the pace, but are things of live.

Jon "Maddog" Hall

Jon “Maddog” Hall, we knew we could not bring to the Congress because of the economic problem of a transoceanic trip, but Luis Ivan asked him for a video for the conference and always attentive Maddog sent him: “What is Free Software”. Jon “Maddog” Hall, president and executive director of Linux International is one of the great figures of history that promotes free software all over the world. On his last visit to Spain last summer at the Campus Party Spain   he met by two of Asturix Dev Team who were in Valencia: Luis Iván Cuende and Ricardo López. Since then supports Asturix Project and specifically  Luis Iván Cuende through conferences where he has been named as one of the most promising young international free software, and even in some items such as Linux Magazine published just the birthday of Luis Ivan, 9/26/11. The video talks about Free Software and its influence in the world and the story of some young people taking open source and became very famous as the founder of Red Hat started creating a small distribution and is now a billionaire, or creator of Asterisk, the popular open source PBX, also a billionaire, and other cases, because Maddog says: “this type of person is to whom the future belongs.”

At the request of the President of the Festival Society and Culture “San Pedro” was performed an Asturix installation on a computer that provides Abraham Montes. Luis Iván Cuende and Carlos Hellin did handle it on the fly and within minutes was up and running at full capacity. The truth is it was a pretty powerful computer and used Asturix 3 of 64 bits. The installation of a GNU / Linux on a computer is something that many people are able to do alone because of the friendly interface that is used today. It lagged far behind those tedious and complicated process, and now even the installation of GNU / Linux to coexist with other operating systems is really quick and easy. Luis Ivan and Carlos invited people to do the same with those teams still do not have a GNU / Linux as Asturix.

Luis Miguel Cuende spoke about “Libre Office: The Power of Community”. About a year ago, at the Libre Software World Conference was held in Malaga in a speech coinciding with canadian Louis Suarez-Potts, the Community Development Manager responsible for Oracle Open Office and when asked about the future of Open Office said “I knew nothing”. And that’s what really happened, that Oracle did not want to do anything with Open Office when the “appropriateness” of the free office suite to absorb Sun in January 2010 which in turn had bought earlier in the 1999 Star Division Borries, the brand created by Marco Borries who at 16 years (in 1985) challenged Microsoft with StarOffice which went on to sell 25 million copies worldwide. Then came what had to happen, that a number of developers responsible assumed

The celebration in Bilbao of the XXVIII National Congress of Junior Enterprises gathered more than 200 junior entrepreneurs from Spain and Europe around the theme “bilbONrocking.” This event marks the opening of a new era of knowledge society for all Basque, Spanish and international. “I want to change the world.” Nothing less. Young Luis Ivan Cuende (Oviedo, 1995), aiming high since he was just 12 years. Just created a project called Asturix, which consisted of setting up an operating system that seeks to “compete” with Windows and Mac. Beginnings of an entrepreneur is never easy, but a child of 12 years are even more arduous. “I had problems with the closed minded people.” However, the idea had potential and soon arrived institutions and sponsors willing to assist in the company. In the present works a dozen people between 14 and 47 years with the firm. So far, so altruistic.

Its software has been installed in over 20 countries around the world and it lays the foundation of another company with another boy of 16 years Murcia. “It will be  the first desktop distributed in the world. Instead of having a third party server is distributed over several computers at once without relying on a third party to synchronize files,” said the young Asturian.

Luis Miguel, the father of this restless young man who speaks with a confidence beyond her age, is devoted to computing. A Luis Ivan had never particularly liked computers, but at age 12, by chance, came to him a CD with free software and interested. His family supported him, after saving some initial reluctance. In a couple of months convinced them he was “not crazy”.

“People often think that I spend the day stuck in a cave programming, but actually when I was 12 years spent an hour a day, which was increased.
