Asturix has been selected as one of the twenty projects to be presented at the Forum for Innovation Projects of the Europe Campus Party.
This is further recognition of an innovative and very special project that seeks to bring free software to the general public and aims to be more than another Linux distribution. It now has five versions and is fast becoming one of the most popular in the world as can be seen from Distrowatch's popularity list; since it entered the list ten days ago, it has risen steadily (and now occupies position 133).The project, free and open to everyone, continues ro advance thanks to its founder, Luis Ivan Cuende with the driving force and collaboration of the Asturix Development Team and is gaining success and fame specially outside Asturias. Asturix Store, is now a reality, and, with the collaboration in CADI with Kademar as well as the ambitious website compiler being developed, Asturix is today a project with an excellent infrastructure. It has a unique projection in the free software world where any developer, documenter or user, etc., can participate, showing one of the greatest advantages of free software, namely, the ability of anyone to make their contribution. Next Thursday 15th at 17.30 the project will be presented by Luis Ivan Cuende in Madrid, on stage at the Forum's Innovation Campus Party Europe in the "Magic Box." The full email message received from the organization is posted below.

KDE is the most innovative desktop environment today and its most recent versions are the most functional and stable available.
Since the Akademy-es event is to take place shortly, it is appropriate to announce that the default desktop environment for Asturix 3 will be KDE 4. The main reason for this change, and there are many, is that KDE is advancing with giant strides from version to version.
The Association KDE España and Itsas, the free Software Group of the UPV/EHU (University of the Basque Country), are jointly organizing Akademy-es in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the Basque Governent, This event will bring together KDE users and developers and is to be held in the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería de Bilbao on 7, 8 and 9 of May 2010..
During the event talks, workshops (and other activities such as outings and dinners, etc.) will be held with the aim of meeting the following aims:
-
To bring KDE developers together from all over Spain so that they can meet and discuss the projects they are working on, sharing source, experiences and knowledge.
-
To inform university teachers and students about the potential and advantages of KDE with regard to promoting the development of final-year degree projects related to this desktop environment and also to give a stimulus to the growth of the community.
-
To make the KDE project better-known as a desktop and development environment to people without a technical background.
For more information, please see the official announcement: http://www.kde-espana.es/akademy-es2010/doku.php?id=anuncio

A Linux distribution created so that any user with no previous knowledge of this system will be comfortable using it. It is said to be suitable for Widows users. As the lecturer (Luis Iván Cuende) mentioned, “Asturix aims to be a functional operating system which is easy to use, secure, fast and stable.” In Asturix, we focus on ease of use. There are tools available so that everyone will feel comfortable with Asturix even those whose experience is unfortunately limited to Windows which is used by the majority of users.”
In the lecture held on 10 March 2010 at the EUITIO Esc. Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica. de Informática de Oviedo, University Technical Engineering School of Computer Studies in Oviedo), it became very clear that the Asturix Project is as humble as it is ambitious. Asturix Store, one of the three important projects announced in the previous official presentation of Asturix 2 is almost ready. In the lecture, the project was offered to the university community to encourage people to get involved in the promotion of today's free software. Asturix has already come a long way and now possesses an important web infrastructure. In the morning, Jos'e Emilio Labra, the Director of EUTIO commented that he considered favourably the possibility of a student doing a final-year degree project in collaboration with the Asturix Project.
The general discussion lasted longer than had been expected and some very interesting ideas were put forward, above all by de Oscar Luis Castro Pérez, Vice-Dean of the Colegio de Ingenieros T. Informáticos de Asturias (CITIPA). Students of the EUITIO, like Óscar Tomico took part and also a lecturer, Darío Álvarez Gutiérrez participated. Luis Díaz Ordax, of the Banco Herrero installed Asturix Business 2.0, 64 bits on his pendrive. To conclude, this was another occasion to promote free software on the basis of a project now well-known outside Asturias and which is also beginning to receive greater support from within the region. We will upload one or two videos to the Community web about the event. The University of Oviedo has also included the recording of the event within the subject de web engineering.
